Ever feel like you’re getting lucky all the time? What about the opposite? Ever feel like everyone is out to get you? Ever feel like life isn’t happening the way it should? The way society tells us it should happen…

You’re not alone — I’m learning that there is no perfect script to your life although that’s what pushed on us day in and day out. Society tells us that we should do this and be that by a certain age. Society tells us that this is how our relationships should be, this is when we should buy a house this is how we should go about our lives. But life works in mysterious ways in every aspect of our relationships, our businesses, our friendships and our day to day experiences.

I tried going about my life the way I was supposed to. I tried doing what society told me I should be doing and it didn’t “work.” Life threw me curve balls and knocked me down. Life tested me and pushed me and pulled me apart. It made me believe that it was out to get me because things weren’t happening the way I was told they would. But then I started to realize something, I started to realize that life isn’t one big blue print but rather a maze that leads to surprises everywhere.

Life happens for you, not to you. Life is a series of learning lessons, experiences, struggles and successes that when added together, shape you to who you are. Just because society says you should get married by this age, buy a house by that age, have kids, start or don’t start a business, live or not live on your own terms, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is as life happens all around you and for you, self awareness is key. Remove yourself from the situation and look down on what’s happening. What can you learn? What can you see? What can you extrapolate from the situation at hand?

When you start living like life happens for you rather than to you, you identify opportunities and grow rather than playing the victim card like so many of us do.

When you start living like life happens for you rather than to you, you are able to find happiness in even the smallest of things.

When you start living like life happens for you rather than to you, you are able to brush off the petty things that used to bother you but no longer do.

When you start living like life happens for you rather than to you, you walk around more open minded than you once were.

When you start living like life happens for you rather than to you, you allow yourself to take steps towards what you want regardless of society’s opinions about it.

Everyone on this earth has the potential to be what they want to be but the path to get there may not always be the one we thought. We must remain open minded and not allow society’s opinions dictate our actions. When you get to that point, it’s extremely liberating and reassuring knowing that you are doing what you want to do, not what others are telling you that you should do.

So go out, be open minded and understand that life happens for you, not to you.
